Movie Genre Analysis

Today i looked at the movie "American Pie" and looked at what features make up a teen comedy. I looked at the Conventions, how the titles are layed out and what audience the films appeal to.

Conventions

Sex - Many, if not all of the scenes shown have sex, or some sort of sex reference in it. Either in a club/Party or in someones dorm room.

Embarrasing parents - stiffler's dad tries to het him layed, but is not successfull. He also produces a list of all the women he has slept with, and stiffler's friends mum is on there so both he and his friend get very embarrassed.

Embarrassing encounter with a girl - stiffler uses the toilet in the coed bathroom, and after a girl he meets gets in the shower he accidentally urinates on her shampoo and himself because he is watching her friend walk accross the bathroom naked.

Enemy Sides - The Beta house(Jocks) are clashing with the nerds or geeks as to who throws the best party and gets the best girls.

Drinking - Beta house shows all of the students getting drunk and dancing with the girls while club and dance music is played loudly. stiffler vomits over one of the girls he is dancing with.

Embarrassing incidents - Stiffler's new dorm buddy is having sex with a girl when he walks in. She starts to choke and he gets behind her to push the chewing gum out and his dad walks in and from the back it looks like he is having a threesome with them. allthough he knows this is a complete misunderstanding.

Titles
"Big Brown" The name of the company is shown rather than the actors real names.
The american Pie logo is also shown.

Representation
The students are all shown as sex mad.
It gives the impression they're always at a party and never seem to be doing any work, even
though it is said throughout the film that its "All about the education."

Audience
The age range that this film appeals to is generally the late teens (around 16)to about the age of 25. This is because we are seen as doing alot of these thibgs, and generally we are so it makes the ideal film for young people because they can realate to it.

In the opening scene we see stiffler and his best friend being driven down the street to colege by their dad, and the first thing wee see is lots of young hot girls. This sets the scene for the whole film. We can see that this is going to be the basis of the whole film. Showing these girls from the beginning draws the us in, as stereotypically we are doing the same things as the people in the film. The idea being that we can't look away from them and get drwan into their world of sex, dancing and all night parties and absolutely no work!
